In the Middle Ages, like most towns, the town had public or private wells providing access to water. But Blésoise's specificity lay in the existence of a network of living water fountains, reputed to date back to Gallo-Roman times.
Under the influence of King Louis XII, this network was redeveloped in 1511 by master fountain builder Pierre de Valence. He replaced the old lead pipes with terracotta ones. During the 16th century, new fountains were added, and Blois counted as many as ten.
In 1852, technical advances led to the construction of the Loire waterworks: water from the river was first distributed via a network of standpipes, then to homes.
The waterworks, refurbished in 2009, is still the main supplier of water to the Blésois community.
