Saint Dyé-sur-Loire retains all the authenticity of the Loire villages, with a hint of the royal stamp. The village enjoyed its heyday during the construction of the Château de Chambord, 5km away. The tufa stone was transported by river, unloaded at the 800-metre-long port of St Dyé, then taken by horse and carriage back to the estate.
On the scale of the Château de Chambord, we can imagine the flow of workers by trade, crews and the entire local economy that had to meet the daily needs of food, lodging and devotion. All this activity is inscribed in the stone of the village buildings.
