Historic port of Chambord castle, Saint Dyé-sur-Loire represents the heyday of Loire villages

Saint Dyé-sur-Loire retains all the authenticity of the Loire villages, with a hint of the royal stamp. The village enjoyed its heyday during the construction of the Château de Chambord, 5km away. The tufa stone was transported by river, unloaded at the 800-metre-long port of St Dyé, then taken by horse and carriage back to the estate.

On the scale of the Château de Chambord, we can imagine the flow of workers by trade, crews and the entire local economy that had to meet the daily needs of food, lodging and devotion. All this activity is inscribed in the stone of the village buildings.

A stroll through the village

Tours of the village with its most beautiful houses and flower-filled alleyways are available from the Maison de la Loire.

The imposing church

The monument imposes itself in the heart of these few intertwined streets, 200 meters from the Loire. The construction site of the Château de Chambord in the early 16th century had to accommodate all the faithful visitors. Materials such as stone, slate and lead from England were unloaded at the 4 landing points. Agricultural products, such as wine and sometimes vinegar, were also brought in.

The church dates back to the 15th century, and protects the tomb of Saint Déodat, a hermit who founded the village, visible in the heart of the building through a glass skylight in the floor.

The local Tours et Détours association organizes regular tours, and you can obtain further information from the Maison de la Loire, which acts as a tourist information center.

La Maison de la Loire your reference point

In a former 17th-century coaching inn on the main street, a visit area is dedicated to the river. Access via the courtyard is a delightful discovery, with its relaxing calm. The outside layout is ideal for a stroll.

Inside, the boutique fulfills its mission of introducing visitors to the flora and fauna through books and objects, often adapted for children. The “Renaissance de Loire” scenography is accessible free of charge, but a leaflet (€2) is available to enhance the discovery.

The Maison de la Loire is first and foremost a place for raising public awareness of the Loire ecosystem, and nature outings are organized on a regular basis, including the famous beaver outing.

Located on the route of the Loire à vélo, you’ll find a bicycle service area (parking, repairs, VAE electricity, water).
